Coding Work Queue
If you are planning to follow a recommended learning pathway, code each case sequentially as presented in the recommended work queue. You do not have to code all cases, however important coding, clinical and treatment concepts are included in each encounter. If you would rather select your cases based on diagnoses, procedures or clinical type, simply select your case from the file below and you will be linked out to the selected case. It is recommended you review all educational resources embedded in each encounter as they are meant to enhance your understanding of all aspects of the clinical condition.
Necessary Steps in Coding
Coding is not just about assigning numbers to disease and surgical procedures. It is also about data analysis and abstracting information. One of the first steps you should take before starting to code the conditions and procedures is to validate you have accessed the correct patient account. Review the patient name, account number and the date of service. If you are using an encoder, verify that same data is reflected on the encoding screen. Whether coding from paper charts, digital images and/or electronic medical records, be sure all documents reflect the same demographic information. This includes sex, age, site of service, type of account etc. Any errors in demographics may cause an internal denial when the coded data flows through the revenue cycle process. Following these steps will assist your facility in preventing delayed, denied or incorrect claims. |
Website Administrator Note: Employ your critical thinking skills when working through the coding cases. Use the recommended documents and refer to all web links provided on the encounters. Also watch all video presentations embedded on the accounts. The intent is to allow you to employee your coding skills and also broaden your clinical and regulatory knowledge and competency! Focus on the quality of your coding . This is not the time to rush through an assessment. Each coding encounter allows you ample time for completion.
