Medical Associations Offering
Coding Guidance For Free
Sometimes, a coder or auditor has exhausted all available resources from CPT™ and the CMS's regulatory guidance. In those instances, it is acceptable to turn to professional medical associations for advice and guidance. Many of the associations require a membership fee to access their database of coding guidance. There are some, including those listed below, that provide this guidance for free.
Using this coding guide, the coder/auditor must ensure it is up-to-date and does not conflict with CPT or regulatory guidance. Coders must further keep in mind that the CPT manual was written with the medical professional in mind. It is guidance applicable to the provider. Coders who are coding for the facility may access the regulatory guidance for information that is explicitly applicable to their settings. |
