Last Updated 07/08/2020
According to the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting 2020, codes are assigned to report social determinants from categories Z55-Z65. Persons with potential health hazards related to socioeconomic and psychosocial circumstances include problems related to education and literacy, employment and unemployment, occupational risk factors; housing and economic conditions (homelessness, inadequate housing, extreme poverty, etc.); social environment; and problems that include other psychosocial circumstances.
Watch these videos and gain valuable insight into how patients potentially compromise their health and create life long medical conditions that affect them.
As a coder, you will be assigning diagnosis codes for conditions directly associated with the abuse and dependence of drugs, food, alcohol and tobacco, and chronic diseases.

Seattle is Dying
Published by Eric Johnson, KOMO News
March 14, 2019
Website Administrator Note: I've lived near Seattle off and on since I was in the 5th grade. It was, at one time, a beautiful city. It is now a shadow of its former self. The streets are unsafe; the homeless are everywhere along with the filth, urine, feces, and trash that accompanies an unfortunate life. And it is not the fact that they are homeless that is the primary cause of concern. That factor could be greatly remediated with support from the city. It is the psychosocial factors that have significantly impacted their lives, and everyone eases as well. Rampant drug abuse and dependence have prompted a shocking rise in theft and violent crime. This, along with a city council that seems paralyzed by apathy, has brought Seattle to its knees. There are, of course, other reasons for homelessness, including, more rarely, a seriously debilitating mental illness. Whatever the reason, Seattle is dying, businesses are leaving, and visitors to our once beautiful city are shocked by what they see. Those of us who knew what Seattle was historically are disheartened.
Watch this video and reflect on the impact of homeless, drug abuse, and dependence and mental health issues the next time you code a record with those conditions documented.
